The US said Russia had already set up terrorists Ukraine to do the work of a “false flag” to use as a pretext for the Russian invasion, which Washington says could begin next month.

The allegations, in line with the Kyiv government’s claims, come after a series of weekly talks to end Russia’s growing number of more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. Moscow has been portraying the crisis as a military threat from Ukraine against Russia, without providing any evidence.

“Russia is laying the groundwork for an opportunity to justify war-torn activities, including destructive activities and intelligence activities, by blaming Ukraine for preparing for an attack by Russian troops in eastern Ukraine,” the US official said.

“We have information that indicates that Russia has already appointed a team of workers to carry out the false flag-raising work in eastern Ukraine.”

“Russian actors have already started producing Ukrainian shows in government and on television,” he said, noting that Russia used the same tactics before being deported to Crimea in 2014.

“The Russian military is planning to launch a new operation in the next few weeks, which will run from mid-January to mid-February.”

Ukrainian officials have also suggested that the harassment could be likened to violence at a Russian embassy or consulate, in which Moscow could be prosecuted by Ukrainian terrorists.

The US statement came the same day Ukraine has been hit by “cyber attacks”, and pages of several government departments including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education have failed.

Officials said it was too early to comment on anything, but cited the “long history” of Russian terrorists in Ukraine, the attack comes after security talks between Moscow and the US and allies this week.

Reports have surfaced that Russian terrorists suspected of theft have left a message on the Foreign Ministry’s website. It said: “People of Ukraine! … Everything about you is made public. Be afraid and expect the worst. It is the past, the present, and the future. ”
