JERUSALEM (AP) – Israel has donated $ 500,000 to the United Nations for food, medical care and other assistance to Afghan refugees in Tajikistan, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
Alon Ushpiz, the prime minister, said Israel was proud to be part of a global effort to help the Afghan people who fled the Taliban to seize the country in August. Ushpiz said the aid was part of Israel’s commitment to other countries.
The donations came the same day the UN requested $ 5 billion to help Afghanistan and its neighbors.
The request is seeking $ 4.4 billion from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, including $ 623 million for the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, to help more than 6 million Afghan refugees. Then about 15% of the total population of Afghanistan.
Some continue to cross the border, UNHCR said, noting that about 175,000 have returned to the country since the Taliban occupation.
